AI LEARN

Software Engineering, AI, and Learning

The Software Engineering unit, in collaboration with AI LEARN, invites you to a seminar featuring two invited talks.

Computer screen with code

12:30–13:15: Hackathons, Open Source, and AI: New Frontiers in Collaborative Software Development — Alexander Nolte, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and Carnegie Mellon University.

13:15–14:00: AI and Cognitive Development: AI in Education and General-Purpose AI — Irene-Angelica Chounta, University of Duisburg-Essen.

Both talks will include time for Q&A.
Registration is free but mandatory

About the Speakers

Alexander Nolte is Associate Professor  of Participatory Software Design and Innovation in the Software Engineering and Technology cluster of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eindhoven University of Technology. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Software and Societal Systems Department at Carnegie Mellon University.

Alexander’s research sits at the intersection of Software Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction. It focuses on understanding and developing means to support individuals in collaboratively designing and developing software, and on evaluating its impact in corporate, entrepreneurial, civic, educational, and scientific settings. His work starts from the view that technology is socially constructed and, in turn, shapes society, with collaboration as the core mechanism. His current research centers on the impact of hackathons, on open research software practices, and on how generative AI changes collaborative software creation.

Alexander is the author of more than 100 papers and articles, published in venues related to Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, and Information Systems. He is actively involved in the organization of scientific conferences as program chair, associate chair, track co-chair, and program committee member. He has won multiple best paper, distinguished paper, and distinguished reviewer awards, and is a senior editor of Behaviour & Information Technology. He is the co-creator and main maintainer of the widely used Hackathon Planning Kit and a co-founder and steering committee chair of the “Hack the Hackathon” unconference series. He is also a member of the ACM.

Irene-Angelica Chounta is Professor in Computational Methods in Modeling and Analysis of Learning Processes at the Department of Human-centered Computing and Cognitive Science at the Faculty of Computer Science, University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) in Germany. Her research focuses on computational learning analytics for technology-enhanced learning, Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) and educational technologies. Her main research interest is to model learners' behaviour in order to provide adaptive and personalised feedback, either in formal or informal contexts.

Chounta is an Executive Board Member of the International Artificial Intelligence in Education Society (IAIED), and a member of the International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS) and the European Association for Technology Enhanced Learning (EATEL).
